"Las llaves de la ciudad, 2011"

Exhibition view:
Dublin Contemporary 2011, Dublin, Ireland, 2011

Teresa Margolles invited keymaker Antonio Hernández Camacho from Ciuadad Juárez to interact with the public, sharing stories about the plight of owning a small business in a border city riddled with drugs and violence. For 40 years, Antonio had a shop on Avenida Juárez where he carved words into keys, making souvenirs for the city. In his struggle to keep his business, Antonio worked weekends across the border in El Paso, Texas, an action that reflects the ongoing social and economic conditions of life on the US/Mexico border. Ultimately, however, problems in Ciudad Juárez forced him to close his shop.
