At this year’s Art in Basel our gallery is represented in three major sections:
Art Statement, Art Unlimited and Art Film.
For Art Statement a jury has selected solo exhibitions proposed by galleries.
Our gallery is the only Swiss gallery picked.
Martin Schwander and Simon Lamunière curated Art Unlimited, an exhibition of
works or installations too large or voluminous for a regular booth.
During the art fair every evening Art Film will present videos and films selected
by a jury. The works will be shown at Stadtkino/Kunsthalle Basel. You will find the entire program at every information desk or on
www.art.ch. No entrance fee will be charged upon Art-tickets.
For Art Statement Swiss sisters Claudia (* 1964) and Julia (* 1965) Müller created their art fair booth “Random Signs”. From the outside a colourful, bright and glossy wallpainting expects attention. The painting is inspired by home made stitched patterns in happy colours. The room inside, painted in grey, shows two dozen ball-pencil drawings in black and white. The drawings, 38 by 49 centimeters, hang alone or are grouped to diptychs or triptychs. They are projections of intimate, public, abstract signs: fire, a couple, patterns, an Indian, a madonna, a pistol, a ship, a skyscraper, suggestive communication that Claudia & Julia Müller have created, copied, searched for or found.
For Art Unlimited Swiss artist Stefan Altenburger (* 1968 in Zürich) has installed “Cluster”, that was shown for the first time in the summer of 1999 at Kunstverein Karlsruhe. On three video projections we can see an oversized hand that creates
a sound, similar to a radio frequency, by the mean of a theremin. Theremins were the first synthesizers, named after their inventor. They have the form of an antenna. A theremin is standing on a table, and as a visitor you can actively take part in the installation by moving your hand in the proximity of the theremin (but not touching it) to evoke your own sound. “I am interested in an instrument you can play without even touching it”, comments Altenburger. “Cluster” combines several fields of Altenburger’s work: video, installation, sound, and the participation of a visitor.
During Art Film six videoclips by Swiss artist Zilla Leutenegger (* 1968 in
Zürich) will be shown. They were produced in 1999 and show the artist as singer, dancer, actress of a stand-up music group called “The Moles”. The clips shown are e.g. “Tracey, Tracey, say that you love me”, „Adam und Eva” and also “I am sick of you”. Zilla Leutenegger works in the fields of photography, drawings, video, trick film and installation.
