Project Space: new animations by Francis Alÿs

On view from April 10 until May 31, 2025

Galerie Peter Kilchmann is pleased to present a group exhibition featuring new and recent works by Marc Bauer, Valérie Favre, Zilla Leutenegger, Teresa Margolles, Valentin Rilliet, Grace Schwindt, Shirana Shahbazi, and Melanie Smith. The show brings together diverse practices—ranging from painting and photography to sculpture and installation—that explore ideas of identity, memory, abstraction, and socio-political realities.

Highlights include Valentin Rilliet’s large-scale diptych Untitled (Stage), a striking fusion of Chinese socialist-realist imagery and William Blake-inspired symbolism, and Teresa Margolles’ Mundos, a powerful neon installation evoking the industrial noise and social tensions of Ciudad Juárez. Grace Schwindt presents new sculptures and paintings that reflect on the fragility of the human body through classical forms, while Shirana Shahbazi’s vibrant photographic works challenge the boundaries between abstraction and representation.

In the Project Space, Francis Alÿs premieres two new animations: Manos Caminando (2023) and Untitled 'Lullaby' (2024). Made from hundreds of pencil-on-paper drawings, these short films depict simple hand and foot games—ritualistic gestures that resonate with Alÿs’s ongoing interest in play, repetition, and the poetic language of movement. Accompanied by soft, humming voices, the animations offer a quiet intimacy, blurring the line between the visual and the tactile.
