Christine Streuli Upscape: Opening: Friday, August 29, 6 -8 pmZahnradstrasse 21, Zurich
Galerie Peter Kilchmann is pleased to present Upscape, the first solo exhibition at the gallery by Christine Streuli (b. 1975, Bern; lives and works in Berlin).
The exhibition brings together large and medium-format paintings, works on paper, and a wallpaper installation. Streuli reimagines the idea of landscape through radiant color fields, abstract gestures, and stenciled motifs. Gradients evoke sunsets, circles suggest moons, and waves dissolve into brushstrokes—transforming familiar signs of beauty into images that also reflect destruction, ecological fragility, and dystopian worlds.
Known for her expansive, color-charged “all-over” paintings, Streuli creates immersive environments where canvases and wall works merge, intensifying the spatial experience. At the same time, each painting asserts itself as a singular composition, balancing tension and harmony through intricate patterns, hints of figuration, and luminous layering. Her process combines intuition and concept, gesture and control. Using techniques such as spraying, pouring, and sprinkling paint—sometimes with unconventional tools like rakes and stencils—Streuli pushes the physical limits of painting. A single gesture may be magnified, fractured, or repeated, generating dynamic fields where structure and fluidity collide.
Deeply attuned to contemporary life and its paradoxes, Streuli’s works invite viewers into a cosmos of contrasts: moments of ecstasy and beauty intertwined with signs of disruption and uncertainty.
