Overview

At the Hayward Gallery’s HENI Project Space, The Politics of Skin and Movement presents a new iteration of a constellation of works — including drawings, bronze sculptures, kinetic objects, and moving images — arranged to create a contemplative, immersive experience. These small-scale pieces are installed on and around structures that echo the furniture of Mumbai land‑administering offices, with drawers filled with sand instead of paper records, evoking bureaucratic erasure and labour histories.

The installation engages directly with ideas of body, movement, and labour, using subtle mechanical motion and textured materials to embody conditions of work, touch, and skin politics. The rough bronze surfaces recall the hands and feet of menial labourers, while kinetic elements and ambient sound in the space create an atmosphere of quiet rhythm and reflection. Through these relational installations of objects and media, the exhibition invites viewers to slow down and experience a nuanced meditation on access, movement, and the physicality of lived experience.
