Homes Everywhere, for Everyone: Concepts of Home in 21st-Century Art and Society
Homelands are the central theme of this book. How do people find and create homelands in today’s fast-paced and constantly changing societies? The urgency of this question is strikingly evident in 21st-century art, where numerous artists address the themes of homeland, migration, and belonging in both poetic and direct ways.
The meanings of the German concept of “Heimat” have multiplied. It has long since ceased to be understood solely in geographical terms. Through the lens of art, this publication explores the numerous facets of “Heimat” in our globalized and digitized world in an analytical, interdisciplinary, and forward-looking manner. How can we create inclusive havens of “Heimat” in our multicultural societies? What role can museums play? A highly topical and more urgent issue than ever in times of massive political change.
