Uwe Wittwer: Die schwarzen Sonnen

Kunstmuseum Grenchen, Grenchen, Switzerland

Overview

Wittwer usually draws on existing stock images, which he reinterprets according to his own ideas. Current or historical photos from the Internet can serve as models, as can pictures from the family album or well-known works from the canon of art history.

The result is mostly large-format paintings, watercolors and inkjet prints in which the motifs seem to dissolve as if in an elusive image of a vague memory. The works seduce with a sensually charged handwriting and, in their mixture of ambiguity and enigma, are both extremely attractive and irritating. After numerous exhibitions in Europe, the solo exhibition at Kunsthaus Grenchen is Uwe Wittwer's first museum presentation in Switzerland in ten years. Works from recent years will be on view that have only been shown abroad to date, as well as a group of works that is being presented to the public for the first time ever.
